We’ve been transforming a playground in Islington into a technology-enabled interactive experience designed to combine kids’ love of outdoor play with their passions for music, tech and gaming …

This week we opened the Connected Playground from Virgin Media O2, a new experience powered entirely by Virgin Media O2’s 5G and gigabit broadband networks.

The playground challenged children to create their own musical track by interacting with modified swings, slides and climbing frames to create an interactive environment that reacted in real time to their play. Their movement also stimulated the lighting on the playground equipment to change colour, making the experience even more stimulating.

The playground was opened in response to consumer research which revealed the concerns parents have around how much their children play outside.

We teamed-up with child psychologist Sam Wass (of Secret Life of 4 and 5 Year Olds) to ensure our park provided the very best experience for kids and partnered with choir master Gareth Malone and dad of three, as our spokesperson to head up the campaign alongside Sam.

Issuing our visual assets to press alongside our research to drive excitement around the playground opening and invite the public to book their free slot.

It’s gone down a storm with press across nationals, consumer and tech online and broadcast with 110 pieces of coverage (and counting) including Daily Mail, Daily Star and Daily Telegraph (to name just a few). We’ve also had over 150 kids come down and play (despite the snow and torrential rain!).

If this is the future of play, we are very much on board.
